You are restricted to in-system flights unless you by the JumpDrive.
Tip:
0) install my "Pods patch"
1) sell Cargo expantion, by 10 dumbfire missiles, and probably another laser
2) trade commodities between bases in Troy, it's possible to earn 1-2k per trip
3) by Afterburner, Engine Upgrade, ASAP
4) avoid fights, if you can't go to heads-on attack with guns+dumbfires
5) buy JumpDrive eventually, go to New Detroit and surrounding systems
